Low Carbon Plate Steels are manufactured in separate carbon ranges which are related to thickness and process requirements. ¾ Inches plates and smaller are manufactures to the least carbon range (0.10-0.20) to attain maximum welding properties and cold forming purpose. For sizes in range of ¾ Inches to 1- ½ Inches the carbon range varies between 0.15 to 0.25 for better machining quality, while retaining its welding properties and cold forming properties. Plates sizes above 1-½ Inches will have higher values of carbon (0.20 to 0.33), namely killed steel and provides the best combination of, weldability, strength and structural properties.
MEDIUM CARBON STEEL PLATE
Medium Carbon steel plates have a carbon range of (.40-.50) this higher carbon presence gives a better strength. gives a better strength. Cold forming and welding properties are limited on these plates, small and medium thicknesses plates can be heat treated to achieve greater strength. These medium carbon plates gives better machining quality.
Structural steel made from specific grades of steel having specific chemical compositions and mechanical properties to have properties for structural applications.
A283C (EU - S235), A570 Gr40 (EU - S275) and A572 Gr50 (EU - S355) are the most commonly used structural steel plate grades.

ASTM A285 (Grade A, Grade B & Grade C), ASTM A515, ASTM A516, ASTM A572. Boiler and pressure vessel plates are manufactured following strict ASTM standards to ensure superior grades of carbon steel are used. ASTM A285 ASTM A285 is used as Standard for Pressure Vessel Plates, it is a Carbon Steel which has Low- and Intermediate-Tensile Strength suitable for fusion welded pressure vessels. There are three grades available with different strength levels. A285 Grade A, A285 Grade B and A285 Grade C. ASTM A515 ASTM A515 has a higher strength compared to ASTM A285 used mainly in construction of medium and high temperature boilers. There are three Grades 60, 65, 70 available with different strength levels. ASTM A516 ASTM A516 is almost similar to ASTM A515 but used in low temperature applications. This is also silicon killed like ASTM A515. ASTM A516 Grade 70 and ASTM A516 Grade 65 are available. ASTM A516 Grade 70 is best for service which are lower than ambient temperatures. And it provides a better tensile and yield strength compared to ASTM A516 Grade 65. ASTM A516 Grade 65 for boiler and pressure vessel fabrication is an excellent choice as a weldable carbon steel. A516 Grade 65 has better tensile and yield strength compared to ASTM A516 Grade 60
